You\u2019ve decided what skin type it is for.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve even designed the packaging!&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when it comes to actually making a natural cosmetic product, how do you know what ingredients to use and how much?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>How the type of natural cosmetic product you are making determines your ingredient choices <\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What ingredients to use depends on the product you are making. In the vast majority of cases, you will be making one of the three types of cosmetic products: anhydrous, water-based or emulsion.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Anhydrous <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">products are usually the starting point for most DIY skincare product makers as they are simple to make; they contain no water (hence the name) and can take the form of lip balms, salves and lotion bars. Anhydrous balms are made with oils, butter and waxes, and so can\u2019t contain any water soluble ingredients, since those won\u2019t dissolve in oils. They can, however, contain oil soluble ingredients, like carrier oils, Vitamin E (an antioxidant) and essential oils.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2020\/10\/1SV03760-3.jpg.webp\" alt=\"How do You Know What Ingredients and Their Quantities to Use in a Natural Skincare Recipe? And since they contain water, a preservative is needed as well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When selecting the ingredients for your natural skincare product, it is really important to decide on the product type first. Do you need water-based ingredients, oil-based ingredients or both? Will you need antioxidants, preservatives, emulsifiers, thickeners, stabilizers? It\u2019s useful even if you only want to create products for yourself, family and friends!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"color: #3d2f8d;\"><strong>Once all these processes are complete, you\u2019ll end up with a list of ingredients that you will need for your product! <\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how will you know how much of each ingredient to use that will ensure a safe, effective and desirable natural skincare product is created?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Learn to write professional cosmetic formulas:<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A formula is the professional way to write what is essentially a skincare recipe.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest difference between a formula and a recipe is that in a formula the amount of each ingredient is written as a percentage.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your formula also includes some key information about your product, such as the INCI name of the ingredients (the scientific or Latin name), the function of the ingredients, supplier, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this stage you\u2019ll want to know how much of each ingredient to use to give you the result you want \u2013 viscosity, aroma, texture, skin feel, thickness, density, pH, color, etc. You\u2019ll need to know their usage rates.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><i class=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #aa2186;\">Different product types require different usage rates of certain ingredients.<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> For example, an anhydrous balm, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/make-lip-balm-no-nasties-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like this lip balm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, will contain only a small percentage of essential oil (0.5%), a high percentage of carrier oil (49.5%), and a reasonable amount of butter (20%) and wax (30%).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Balm-2-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"How do You Know What Ingredients and Their Quantities to Use in a Natural Skincare Recipe?
