It is highly sensitive to heat, vibration, movement and pressure, and it protects us \u2013 from bumps and cold weather, to microorganisms and ultraviolet radiation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"color: #aa2186;\"><i class=\"\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our skin keeps us alive and keeps us healthy.<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how does your skin actually work? What does it do? And how can you take the best possible care of your amazing skin?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What your skin does for you<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a series of crucial functions, vital to life, which your skin is responsible for:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preventing water loss.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Protecting against harmful ultraviolet radiation.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cushioning against bumps and shocks.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping out microorganisms like bacteria, particles and chemicals.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Producing Vitamin D.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The structure of your skin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The skin is structured into three main layers. Starting from what you can see, the outermost layer is called the <\/span><b>epidermis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. There are a number of layers of skin in the epidermis and each layer is made up of different types of cells.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The epidermis is continuously being regenerated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cells in the lower layers are called <\/span><b>keratinocytes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and they move upwards, getting tougher as they get to the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The top layer is called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stratum corneum <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and it\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">actually made of dead skin cells. These constantly flake off and get replaced by layers of new cells coming up from underneath.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The dermis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the tough inner layer, immediately below the epidermis, and it\u2019s much thicker than the epidermis. This is the layer that gives the skin its strength and flexibility, providing protection to the body from strain and stress. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"color: #3d2f8d;\"><strong>It\u2019s also where you\u2019ll find the nerves that sense pressure and temperature.<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The subcutaneous layer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the layer of skin at the bottom, positioned under the dermis and made up of fat and connective tissues. This is called the skin barrier function, and it\u2019s the job of the outermost layer of the epidermis, the layer that interacts most with the outside world.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the layer called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stratum corneum<\/span><\/i><b>,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and you can think of it like a wall made of bricks and mortar. The bricks in this case are dead skin cells called <\/span><b>corneocytes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they form the tough outermost protective layer. It also keeps <\/span><b>NMFs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or natural moisturizing factors, from leaching out of the skin. And the lipid barrier doesn\u2019t just keep good things within your skin; it also keeps things out, preventing the entry of undesirable environmental chemicals and bacteria.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The acid mantle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acid mantle is an extra layer of protection that also acts as a barrier between skin and the outside world. It\u2019s a thin, protective film on the surface of your skin, formed by a combination of sweat and sebum, which is the oil our skin naturally produces.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This protective layer is slightly acidic, with a pH range of 4.5 to 6.5, depending on your skin\u2019s chemistry and the type of products you have been using.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acid mantle helps to keep skin soft, supple, smooth and strong, helps to prevent water loss and helps protect against pollutants and UV rays.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It provides resistance to infection, because the acidity prevents the growth of harmful bacteria which thrive in alkaline environments. It also boosts the immune system by producing antigens close to the surface of the skin so they can kill the \u2018bad\u2019 bacteria.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when the skin barrier and repair functions aren\u2019t working<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply, our ability to maintain glowing, well-nourished and healthy skin is compromised.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When skin is dry, flaky, cracked or even bleeding or has a rough or scaly texture these are the signs of a damaged skin barrier. If the acid mantle is disrupted, it can result in burning or itching skin, or conditions like eczema.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effectiveness of the skin barrier can be influenced by many different factors, including:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultraviolet light \u2013 prolonged exposure can weaken the skin\u2019s natural defence system.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chemicals \u2013 detergents, solvents and even perfumes can change the skin\u2019s pH balance leaving it dry and sensitive.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Water \u2013 too much washing can result in a loss of the skin\u2019s NMF.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aging \u2013 the skin can lose some of its protective function as it matures.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humidity and temperature can cause excessive dryness or oiliness.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where we can make a difference in the skincare products and cosmetics we use.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choosing the right products, or making them ourselves, ensures that the skin\u2019s essential protective functions are maintained, keeping skin looking and feeling good.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often hear of stories from people in our community about how they always just thought they had bad skin. This quality tends to come mostly from carrier oils and butters.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Humectants<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are water soluble ingredients that increase the water content of the top layers of the skin by drawing moisture from the surrounding air or from the dermis. Glycerin is an example of a good humectant.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Occlusives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are usually oil-based ingredients that coat the surface of the skin to form a barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss.
