The following recipe and tutorial are taken from our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/certificate-in-making-natural-skincare-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This recipe is a firm favourite amongst students! One got in touch recently to say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"449\" height=\"108\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Testimonial-Certificate-in-Making-Natural-Skincare-Products.png.webp\" alt=\"Testimonial Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products\" class=\"wp-image-122634\" style=\"width:645px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Testimonial-Certificate-in-Making-Natural-Skincare-Products.png.webp 449w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Testimonial-Certificate-in-Making-Natural-Skincare-Products-300x72.png.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 449px) 100vw, 449px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a simple but wonderful recipe which you could adapt by choosing different carrier oils and essential oils. You can either use small tins or jars, or if you want to create a lip balm in a twist-up stick then you just need to vary the recipe slightly (see below).&nbsp;The second recipe uses more cocoa butter and wax than the first one, to create a firmer balm that works better in a twist-up stick container.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recipes below will make about 6-8 lip balms, either using small tins (eg 15g) or twist-up sticks.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These products cost approximately GBP \u00a30.70 or US $0.95 each to make (including packaging). The approximate cost without packaging is just \u00a30.30 or $0.42 each. Of course the exact cost will depend on where you live, which supplier you use and whether you choose organic ingredients. But regardless of a little price variation, these products are not expensive to make, and in many cases less expensive than to buy.&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a win &#8211; win: better ingredients, and a lower price!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recipe (for jars\/tins)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">73.5g sunflower or sweet almond oil<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16g beeswax (or vegan wax eg candelilla wax, which creates a similar firmness) <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10g cocoa butter<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.5g essential oil of your choice (eg orange, peppermint or geranium)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Lip-balm-in-twist-up-stick.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Make your own lip balm (with no nasties) for under $1 Natural Facial skincare recipes \" class=\"wp-image-122636\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Lip-balm-in-twist-up-stick.jpg.webp 600w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Lip-balm-in-twist-up-stick-300x200.jpg.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Recipe (twist-up sticks)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30g beeswax (or vegan wax eg candelilla wax, which creates a similar firmness)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20g cocoa butter <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49.5g&nbsp;sunflower or sweet almond oil<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">0.5g essential oil (eg orange, peppermint or geranium)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Watch us make this lip balm in the video tutorial<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/252032571?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Equipment list<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make your balms you\u2019ll need:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Digital scales (for measuring your oils and&nbsp;other ingredients)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glass beakers or jugs (to measure your&nbsp;ingredients into)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stirring rod or spoon (for mixing)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Double boiler (for melting ingredients<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jars\/twist-up sticks (for packaging your products)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find out how to create a double boiler (also called a bain-marie or water bath), please see <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our <a href=\"..\/equipment-you-need-making-natural-skincare-products-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">guide to the equipment you need<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to make your lip balm<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Weigh out your butters, wax and carrier oils.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Melt butters, wax and carrier oils together gently in a bain-marie or water bath.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you wish you can melt the harder ingredients with a higher melting point first (cocoa butter, beeswax) then add softer ingredients with a lower melting point (carrier oils). This prevents overheating ingredients.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Once melted remove the mixture from the heat.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Add your essential oils, Vitamin E if you are using it and any other ingredients that are heat sensitive. This is best done by weighing these ingredients as you add.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mix together well.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Pour into containers. It\u2019s important not to allow any drops of water from the bain-marie to get into the product so you may need to dry it with a cloth before pouring.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steps 4-7 need to be completed quickly as products containing wax will set quickly as soon as they start to cool. It\u2019s a magical process watching them form before your very eyes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shelf life and storage&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As balms are oil-based products that do not contain water they do not require a&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preservative. Balms are best used within 6 months although may last longer if stored well, contain an antioxidant (such as Vitamin E) and use ingredients with a long shelf life (ie not ingredients that you have had open a while).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Store in a cool, dark place. If the product becomes warm it will soften and melt.
