That\u2019s the only way to truly know what is in the products you are using, and how safe they really are. This guide will help you do just that.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of cosmetic products appear interesting and appealing, but that doesn\u2019t mean all of them are as efficient and safe as you might think. Many products contain ingredients you may prefer to avoid, ingredients that can be sensitizing and irritating, or ingredients that can even be harmful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy packaging and clever wording on the labels can make you believe the product is something that it actually isn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fancy packaging and clever wording on the labels can make you believe the product is something that it actually isn\u2019t. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, a large number of companies use a product name or label to highlight ingredients that are only present in tiny quantities, and that in reality are not big enough for the ingredient to have an effect, but they sound very attractive on the label.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other companies use words like \u2018natural\u2019 or \u2018organic\u2019 to give the impression that the product is made entirely from natural or organic ingredients, when that isn\u2019t the case. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To really know what is and what isn\u2019t in your product, you need to read the whole label, not just trust an attractive name. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t know how? Much of this information is a legal requirement.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the common information you\u2019ll find includes:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brand name and product name<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">product type\/purpose and description<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ingredient list <\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symbols<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the product weight or volume (net contents)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">usage\/storage directions<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manufacturer contact details.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/What-youll-find-on-a-cosmetic-label.jpg.webp\" alt=\"What you'll find on a cosmetic label\" class=\"wp-image-122546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/What-youll-find-on-a-cosmetic-label.jpg.webp 1000w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/What-youll-find-on-a-cosmetic-label-300x203.jpg.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/What-youll-find-on-a-cosmetic-label-768x521.jpg.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>In this guide we\u2019ll cover the two key areas that you need to understand in order to know what is really contained in the product you are using:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ingredient list<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symbols.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Part 1: Understanding the ingredient list\/INCI list<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the product name and basic characteristics, a cosmetic label will also include ingredients in the product &#8211; <strong>the INCI list<\/strong>. INCI stands for \u201cInternational nomenclature of cosmetic ingredients\u201d and is a naming system for ingredients based on scientific nomenclature.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The INCI list might seem confusing and frightening at first. Don\u2019t be afraid of it, take some time to read and investigate it. If you feel lost in all the scientific names, below we provide some resources to help you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The INCI list might seem confusing and frightening at first. If you feel lost in all the scientific names, below we provide some resources to help you. <\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant ingredients are easy to spot because they are listed with their latin names (always two words) and a common name in brackets, eg rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) oil, which is &nbsp;rosemary essential oil; helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, which is sunflower oil.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some ingredients on the list sound very \u2018chemical-like\u2019 and many people believe that \u2018if you can&#8217;t pronounce the ingredient name, it must be bad for you\u2019. That is not always true. There are plenty of common or naturally derived ingredients that have complicated names, but are safe to use and even have an important function in the product. Here are few examples:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Tocopherol:<\/strong> vitamin E, it protects the product from going rancid.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Xanthan gum<\/strong>: a naturally derived gum that thickens the product.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cetyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol<\/strong>: a fatty alcohol that stabilizes emulsions and has a moisturizing action. It is not drying as pure alcohol (ethanol).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Citric acid<\/strong>: even though it has the word \u2018acid\u2019 in it, it is not harmful. It regulates the pH levels of the product and also protects it from microbial contamination.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Sorbitan olivate<\/strong>: this is an example of an emulsifier, it sounds very \u2018sciency\u2019, but is in fact made from sorbitol (alcohol sugar found in chewing gums) and olive oil.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Potassium sorbate<\/strong>: an example of a preservative, potassium salt of natural sorbic acid, it is also used to preserve foods.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Ingredient order<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The order the ingredients are listed on the label is important. Ingredients are listed in descending order from greatest amount to least amount present in the product (except ingredients present at a concentration of less than 1%; those can be listed in any order).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Allergens<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of an INCI list you will find the allergens listed. These allergens are constituents of natural essential oils or synthetic fragrances. There are 26 possible allergens including geraniol, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">limonene and linalool. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecomundo.eu\/en\/blog\/cosmetics-allergens-europe-compliance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">You\u2019ll a full list of all 26 here<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;Often companies mark with an asterisk or in italics which ingredients are essential oils allergens. It is worth becoming familiar with the common allergens as to the untrained eye these allergens can look <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suspicious.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is an example taken from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nealsyardremedies.com\/skincare\/organic-facial-skincare\/facial-serums-and-oils\/2346.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Neal\u2019s Yard website<\/a> showing how they indicate allergens.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"502\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Neals-Yard-INCI-List.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122509\" style=\"width:682px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Neals-Yard-INCI-List.png.webp 502w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Neals-Yard-INCI-List-300x149.png.webp 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Abbreviated ingredient lists<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, especially on online shops or brand websites, companies do not list all of the ingredients, instead providing just the \u2018key ingredients\u2019 or \u2018active ingredients\u2019, and leaving the rest out. This makes the ingredient list quite short and very appealing too &#8211; it usually contains natural plant-based ingredients. Here is an example from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marykay.com\/en-us\/products\/body-and-sun\/mary-kay-hydrating-lotion-160107#tabbed3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mary Kay<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"949\" height=\"322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Mary-Kay-key-ingredients.png.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Mary-Kay-key-ingredients.png.webp 949w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Mary-Kay-key-ingredients-300x102.png.webp 300w, https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/Mary-Kay-key-ingredients-768x261.png.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 949px) 100vw, 949px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It only mentions chamomile, green tea and aloe extract as active ingredients, which are likely present in tiny amounts, less than 1% of the product. To find out the full list of ingredients you would need to consult the label on the product itself, where a brand is required to list everything.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Resources for understanding INCI names<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal to feel confused by an INCI list at first. These resources are helpful in deciphering INCI names so you can understand more about what the ingredients is and\/or what it does. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewg.org\/skindeep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Skin Deep:&nbsp;<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the Skin Deep website you can research single ingredients or a whole product (if it is in the database). eg products that falsely claim \u2018natural\u2019 or \u2018organic\u2019 origin, or products that emphasize an ingredient for marketing purposes only. While this is absolutely true, the issue is the amount of it. Can you find it on the ingredient list? It is listed almost at the end. The shampoo is likely to contain less than 1% of argan oil, an amount so small it won\u2019t have any real benefit for the hair. Also, notice the emphasis on the word \u201corganic\u201d. The product is far from organic or natural, only the argan oil is organic, but a statement like that on a label might make people believe the shampoo itself is organic.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This leads us on nicely to consider the symbols present on a label. If this shampoo really was organic and had been certified as such then it would also carry a recognised symbol from one of the certification organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Part 2: Understanding symbols<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There can be a whole array of symbols on a cosmetic label! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some symbols can be very useful, helping you see key information about a product at a glance. Others can be more misleading or harder to understand.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"284\" height=\"187\" src=\"https:\/\/www.schoolofnaturalskincare.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2018\/01\/cosmos.jpg.webp\" alt=\"cosmos logo\" class=\"wp-image-122516\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some symbols are official seals or logos that are given to a product (or a company) by an external certification organization such as the COSMOS organic certification.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other symbols are created by the brand to give an impression of a specific quality. The non-official symbols are not necessarily making false claims; the problem is that there is no way of knowing if they are truthful. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a product carries an official organic symbol, eg from the Soil Association, you know that the product meets certain standards required by the certification body. On the other hand, if a product has a made up organic symbol, it might be just a marketing strategy or it might actually mean that the product is organic but the company didn\u2019t go through organic certification (usually due to high costs).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>OFFICIAL SYMBOLS<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s have a look at some of the official symbols you can find on skincare products. These official symbols are used to show:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The expiry date of the product or Period After Opening.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Important or legally required information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the packaging can be recycled.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the product has been certified to a particular organization\u2019s standards.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Below we have included the most common symbols as a \u2018cheatsheet\u201d for you. This list isn\u2019t exhaustive but gives you a good starting point.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><i class=\"\">Expiry date (BBE\/PAO)<\/i><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somewhere on the label you will see an indication of when to use the product by. This might be indicated by a \u2018best before end\u2019 date (BBE), which can be represented by an hourglass symbol, or a \u2018period after opening\u2019 duration, represented by opened jar symbol.
