Module 5 – Cosmetic Ingredients and Raw Materials

If you want to be able to deliberately select ingredients to suit specific needs, concerns and preferences, you need to know:

• About a wide range of natural and organic skincare ingredients; their properties, benefits and uses as well as recommended usage rates.
• The structure and function of the skin, characteristics of different skin types and skin concerns.
• The different types of products you can make as well as their individual uses, benefits and features.

Modules 4 and 5 cover these topics in great depth.

Module 5 is a 600+ page textbook that covers the whole spectrum and a diverse range of ingredients and raw materials used in natural and organic cosmetics. You simply can’t get a textbook as comprehensive or all encompassing as this. Graduates continue to use this textbook as a resource for many years after completing their studies.

Module 6 – Lab Skills, Equipment and Packaging

Whether you want to make products for yourself or to sell, if you want to cultivate the art, skill and science of proper product formulation, you’ll need to make sure you:

• Have the right equipment that also helps you to scale up properly when you need or want to.
• Follow good manufacturing practice – bad practices lead to bad results, unstable and unsafe products as well as lots of wasted time and money.
• Use proper lab techniques and skills that mean you can easily weigh, heat, calibrate, sanitize, mix, homogenize, fill and calibrate.
• Know about the required pH of your products as well as test and adjust the pH.
• Calculate batch sizes correctly, especially when you scale up or down.
• Identify and use the right packaging for the right product.

You’ll learn about and be able to apply all of this in Module 6.

Module 7 – Preserving Skincare Products Naturally and

Module 12 – The Science of Emulsification

If you are going to make products for yourself or to sell, you need to make sure they are safe, stable and effective; you have to get the basics right. 

Science outweighs all rhetoric on this subject, otherwise you seriously risk making products that are not safe for use and that can actually cause more harm than you realize. 

Making safe and stable products is also not just about adding a preservative or an emulsifier. You may need to use multiple ingredients and follow a structured system for both preservation and emulsification.

Of course, this article is very much an introduction to this topic. We teach you everything you need to know about creating stable emulsions using the science of emulsification and creating your own broad-spectrum preservative system – that works! – in these two modules and ensure it’s explained in a way that is easy to understand. Plus, you’ll find a range of natural preservatives and emulsifiers from which to choose.

Module 8 – Formulating Oils, Oil-based Serums and Self-emulsifying Oils, 

Module 9 – Formulating Butters and Balms, 

Module 10 – Formulating Spa-style Soaks, Scrubs and Polishes, 

Module 11 – Formulating Toners, Spritzers, Mists and Gels, and 

Module 13 – Formulating Creams and Lotions

These are the practical formulation modules where you’ll apply your knowledge to actually formulate your own complete range of natural and organic skincare products. This is where you’ll get hands on and make your own products, whether for yourself or to sell.

We’re avid learners, keen seekers of new ideas, new inspiration, new motivation, new experiences. That is not to say that we’re unhappy with what we have, what we know, where we are in life and what we’ve achieved, we just love exploring, learning and experiencing.

Famous life coach and public speaker, Anthony (Tony) Robbins has said many times that most people feel the best in life when they feel they are growing, learning and developing in some way. It is when we’re in this mindset that we feel we are going somewhere positive.

We’ve learned firsthand how true this can be.

For us, being lifelong learners is a never-ending source of inspiration. In tough times, when things are not as great as they could be, it gives us hope, inspiration and motivation to keep on doing what we love.

So what do we learn about? 

Anything and everything we’re passionate about! 

Natural and organic cosmetics, herbs and aromatherapy, yoga, teaching, communicating, running and growing successful businesses are all areas of interest to myself and Gail. 

We have learned about natural & organic living, permaculture, green and eco-friendly innovation, homeschooling, parenting, spirituality, yoga and our connection to Mother Nature. 

We strive to learn more about our own happiness, health and wellbeing… and ultimately, success!

The importance of community

At the heart of our community at the School of Natural Skincare is a shared passion – a passion that propels us in our desire to learn more.

Of course, we’re not saying that success requires you to drop everything and dedicate your whole life to creating natural skincare. For many of us, that simply isn’t an option – we have families to care for, and all the commitments of day-to-day life to contend with. 

Despite all the challenges of juggling life with what you love, we believe that where there’s a will, there’s a way!

So, how could you become a lifelong learner in the midst of all the busy-ness of life?

Finding your passion, finding your ‘why’. 

If you’re reading this, then it’s probably safe to say you have a passion for natural skincare, or at the very least, a desire to learn more. 

Perhaps you care about what you and others put onto your skin. Perhaps you care about what we all put into the environment, and about sustainable living. Whatever the reason, this is your passion – your ‘why’. 

There will be many times in your life that you’ll ask yourself ‘why am I doing this?’. And it is in these  times of uncertainty that you can return to your ‘why’ and gather strength, inspiration, and motivation from the passion that got you here in the first place.

Motivation

Everyone experiences times where they feel flat and at a loss for inspiration – even David Attenborough! However, if we can learn to self-motivate, we can tap into our passion and approach our studies and our craft with fresh energy.

Being able to talk to like minded-people – to share feedback and support – is a fantastic motivator!

Understanding your learning style

We can acquire information in a multitude of ways. Whether it’s auditory, visual or kinesthetic, finding out your method of learning will help you to become a more effective student, as well as bringing more joy to your learning process. 

As Greg Anderson said, “Focus on the journey not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.”. It is when we enjoy the process of learning that we achieve our best results.

Embracing mistakes

Allow yourself to see mistakes in a different light. Realise that mistakes offer the best opportunities for learning, and that they happen to everybody. It’s what you learn from making them that matters.

In fact Joe Rogan said, “We define ourselves far too often by our past failures. That’s not you. You are this person right now. You’re the person who has learned from those failures.”

We couldn’t agree more! 

It is equally important to foster positive self-talk.

Do you ever tell yourself you’re not good enough? 

Perhaps your skin product didn’t turn out the way you’d hoped and you berated yourself as a result.

Fostering positive self-talk is challenging, but it is a skill well worth investing in. We all have the choice to think, say, and feel what we want to. And so, as lifelong learners, we must own our thoughts, and make the choice to adopt a positive mindset in the face of negativity.

Try new things. 

How did you feel when you made your very first skincare product? Perhaps the process was nerve-wracking, uncertain, and daunting at times. Nevertheless, I bet it felt great afterwards! 

The truth is that trying new things can also be one of your biggest sources of inspiration. It’s a fantastic way to learn. After all, how do we know what we like if we don’t give it a go? 

When you’re learning to formulate natural skincare products, a lot will be about trial and error. When faced with these challenges it is important to remember you have to take risks – to move out of your comfort zone – in order to grow and develop. 

If it feels a bit frightening at times, that just means you’re learning!

Be kind to your body

Here’s a reminder to stay in tune with your body when you become a lifelong learner. Working so relentlessly that you burn out doesn’t help anybody, let alone your work.

So, choose to dedicate time to yourself every week. Alongside focused study, find an activity that helps you rest and recharge. Maybe that’s taking a walk in the fresh air or going for a swim. Whatever you choose, give your body and mind the chance to take a break from work. 

It’s tempting to think we don’t have time for self-care, but the truth is that this is how we bring fresh energy and creativity to our craft.

The first thing that brings students to our school is a desire to make their own natural skincare products. Because this is their goal, our students are passionate about learning across a broad spectrum of knowledge.

From ingredients to equipment to good manufacturing practice – from cosmetic regulations to formulating for different skin types and learning practical ‘how to’s – our students are eager to get to the heart of making fantastic natural skincare products.

The good news is that our students quickly realise that learning never ends – and this realisation is an absolute eye-opener! Once you realise that learning is a lifelong process, you will find yourself going down a fantastical rabbit hole of discovery.

We have students with a whole range of aspirations and dreams, but one thing is true of them all – their desire to learn never ends.

The Hobbyist

Some students want to develop their hobby and passion for natural & organic skincare. They want to be able to make fabulous products for themselves and their family, and maybe their friends, too!

The hobbyist is driven by their love of making products. They enjoy the creativity of the process – the fun and enjoyment of it all, and they’re excited to see fantastic end results.

Following the classic trial and error approach and flipping from multiple sources with varying degrees of accuracy is no longer good enough. These students have had enough of being confused by conflicting information and struggling to achieve the results that they seek.

When they come to us, these students tell us that they’re looking for answers; they are looking for confidence and an understanding of the “how” behind making high quality handmade products. DIY done professionally, if you like!

We asked our students to share with us what motivated them to complete the Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products. This is what our student Rose had to share:

‘I’m spending a lot of money buying skincare products that mostly do not work. The course has made me capable of making my own skincare products that I know are healthy and work on my skin, and best of all, much cheaper than all of what I used to buy. And friends always compliment me on how nice and clear and glowing my skin looks.’

For others, it’s about becoming more professional in their approach. Their passion is natural & organic skincare, but it has now become a more serious hobby – maybe even a business idea.

They’ve discovered some really great ingredients and, from time to time, when they try to create a product from scratch, it works! But not always…

Formulating is the art, science and practice of being able to create a beauty product from scratch, without following recipes, and whilst ensuring that industry standard safe practice and guidelines are followed.

Formulating cosmetics is not about throwing ingredients into the mixer and coming out with something safe, stable, effective, unique and brilliant by chance…

There’s a method behind the madness.

The “madness” is not following a tried and tested, structured and proven approach for creating products from scratch. And we see this in the variable results that this approach yields.

The method, on the other hand, gives the formulator the tools, techniques and processes to not only create a product that is safe and stable, but also unique. The method works, and you’ll see this in your consistent results.

For the students learning to formulate, they’re making a conscious effort to upskill. These students have found a shortcut to success – and although shortcuts aren’t always advisable, enrolling in a natural skincare course is so much more than just a time saver. By enrolling, you choose to invest in your skill and dedicate time to your passion.

And all of this with the support of your peers and tutors, and the chance to learn from industry professionals.

These students are motivated to fine-tune their skills, to ensure that the methods they’re following are correct, and to discover an even broader range of ingredients. These formulating techniques enable students to ensure that their products reflect their values, conform to the vision and ethos of the brand, and are created to solve specific skin types and concerns.

Students find themselves honing the ability to formulate a broader range, creating more complex products, and developing a more focused, elaborate idea for their brand in the process. 

Following the structured formulating techniques and product development process taught on our Diploma courses (Skincare, Haircare and Surfactants) and our Advanced courses (Advanced High-Performance Serum Formulation) has enabled many students to design and launch winning brands and sell award-winning products.

When you know that you want to formulate, make, and sell your own line of cosmetic or skin care products, it makes sense to find out how to do this and what is required!

However, one of the common misconceptions that new formulators have about qualifications and certifications is that it’s about certifying the formulator, rather than each individual product itself. We can understand why this might be confusing. In many fields, both inside and outside of the beauty and skincare industry, this is true; someone studies, attends courses, and passes their exams, and they are then licensed as a cosmetologist or beauty professional. But that isn’t how it works with product formulation.

The field of cosmetics is different to most other professions. While an aromatherapist can only practice aromatherapy with the correct qualifications or certifications, and a doctor needs certain qualifications in medicine to practice legally as a doctor, there are no requirements of this kind for people to formulate cosmetics. You can certainly acquire a degree in Cosmetic Chemistry, but this isn’t a prerequisite for formulating and selling cosmetics.

Depending on your local laws and regulations, a formulator must have each of his/her products tested and certified individually. There is currently no certification, accreditation, or qualification that allows a formulator to make and sell whatever he/she wishes! Not even a chemist with a degree in Cosmetic Chemistry can do this. They still need to have their products individually tested.

Why is this important? Well, for passionate skincare entrepreneurs, like yourself, it’s good news that you don’t need to head off to university to formulate your own cosmetic products. But it’s important to have all of your facts straight before you start rushing ahead to launch a product. You may have some experience formulating certain products, or modifying recipes to develop your first products, and want to sell them straight away. But unless they individually pass the relevant tests to show they are safe, you shouldn’t be selling them.

Product Testing: Mandatory, or Just a Good Idea?

As the person creating skincare products and making them available for sale, you are the person responsible for ensuring they are safe. How do you do this? Well, first, you need to formulate safe and stable products, and second, you should send them off for testing which gives you confirmation that they really do meet safety standards.

Every country has their own regulations and specific requirements for selling cosmetics and skin care products. Whatever the legal requirements are, the formulator remains the person responsible for making sure that what they are placing on the market is safe!

The FDA states, 

A manufacturer or distributor of a cosmetic is legally responsible for ensuring that a marketed product is safe when consumers use it according to the directions in the labeling, or in the customary or expected way. FDA can take action against the manufacturer of a cosmetic on the market, if we have reliable information to show that the cosmetic does not meet the legal requirement for safety.

If your products aren’t formulated with safety in mind, the best-case scenario is that they’ll spoil quickly, or don’t work the way you might’ve intended. Worse-case scenario? Your unsafe products could put your professional reputation on the line, and actually harm someone. (And we know you don’t want that!)

So it’s best to do it right!

How can School of Natural Skincare Help?

A degree in Cosmetic Science isn’t required to formulate and sell products, but it is still your responsibility to formulate safe products and where relevant, have them pass the safety tests. This is where we can help! Without heading off to university, we can teach you what you need to know to create safe, stable, and effective products which have a much better chance of complying with cosmetic regulations.

Because you are responsible for placing the very safest products on the market, you’ll want to know everything you need to know to formulate products which have the highest likelihood of passing those safety tests! And safety isn’t the only consideration—even though it’s a very important one, as you can tell! As the product creator, it’s your responsibility to make products which are effective, too—ones that will have the desired outcome for the customer, whether it’s soothing dry, sensitive skin or nourishing irritation. Safe products, plus healthy skin, equals happy and devoted customers!

2) How long does it take to finish the class?

The Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products is our shorter beginners’ course. The time it takes to complete the course really depends on how many products you want to make. You can make as many or few as you like! There are nine Modules and you’ll probably need to allow two to four hours per Module to understand the theory, complete the exercises and practice making a few products.

There are no live classes; everything is pre-recorded so you can study at a time that is convenient for you. You can work through the course as quickly or slowly as you wish.

If you want a longer and more in-depth course then you may wish to consider our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation.

3) How much is the course? Do you offer a payment plan?

The enrollment fee is US $297. We don’t offer a payment plan for this course.

7) How does studying with you work?

Studying online is easy and convenient. You can study at your own pace from the comfort of your own home (or office/library – wherever you wish!).

As soon as you enroll you receive access to the course inside our online classroom. There you’ll find the whole curriculum laid out for you. We provide a variety of study materials – written lessons in beautiful downloadable pdfs, video demonstrations, audio lessons, downloadable worksheets, reference charts, activities and quizzes.

You’ll meet your classmates and tutors in our private student support group (hosted in Facebook). There you can chat to other students 24/7 and if you have a question for a tutor you can ask these each Monday on our Q&A post.

When you have worked through the lessons you can take the end-of-course quiz. Once you have successfully completed the quiz you’ll be issued with your Certificate of Completion. You can retake the quiz as many times as you need to.

8) What is the format of the course?

The course includes a variety of materials: beautifully presented recipes files and written guides, practical video demonstrations, audio lessons, quick reference charts and worksheets.

We also include some “Getting to know your carrier oils/essential oils experience weeks” where you’ll get to know these ingredients first hand by experiencing them for yourself. These are live and interactive weeks run by our tutors in our student Facebook group.

You also have tutor support available when you need it and you’ll become part of our private student community.

9) How long do I have access to the course?

You have access to the course inside the online classroom for 18 months. You can also download and save the documents on your own computer forever. If you want to renew your access to the classroom this is possible for a small renewal fee.

10) Can you go back to view the videos and information after you finish?

Yes you can revisit all of the material as often as you like, even after you have finished the course. We recommend that you download the course materials to your own computer so you can use them after your course access has expired.

11) How do I get my certificate?

There is a quiz to complete at the end of the course and when you have completed that you receive your certificate by email straight away. You can retake the quiz as many times as you need to.

12) Do you include how to make bath bombs?

13) What equipment do I need to get started?

In terms of equipment, you don’t need anything expensive. You can start with simple kitchen/home lab equipment. For example, you’ll need:

• Digital scales.
• Simple glass lab thermometers.
• Some way of creating a double boiler for example jugs/heat-proof beakers and saucepans.
• An electric stick blender.

14) What raw materials/ingredients do I need?

In terms of ingredients we recommend that you start off simple! With just a handful of ingredients you can make many types of product. We suggest you begin with inexpensive carrier oils that are still very beneficial for the skin. This means as you are practicing and learning you won’t waste expensive ingredients.

So it’s probably best to start with:

• 1-2 emulsifiers.
• 1 preservative.
• 1 antioxidant (Vitamin E).
• 2 stabilizers (cetyl alcohol and xanthan gum).
• 1 humectant (glycerin).
• 1 wax (beeswax or a vegan alternative).
• A few basic carrier oils (eg sweet almond, sunflower, apricot kernel).
• A few specialist carrier oils (eg avocado, macadamia, rosehip, raspberry seed, evening primrose).
• A few butters (eg shea and cocoa).
• A few essential oils (the course covers 14 essential oils in depth – you could start with 3-5 of these).

There isn’t a set list of materials that you need. We suggest that you read through some of the recipes and decide what you’d like to make. You can also look through the ingredient charts to see which oils sound appealing to you. Then you can order your ingredients accordingly.

Don’t get overwhelmed – keep it simple! You can always add more ingredients to your collection later.

15) Where can I buy my ingredients?

There are many excellent suppliers of cosmetic ingredients. We provide a very extensive supplier list within our courses that covers suppliers in Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, UK, USA, Canada and more.

The Certificate in Making Natural Skincare Products uses easy-to-source ingredients and it’s likely you’ll be able to find what you need in your country. Depending on where you live you may need to order emulsifiers and preservatives from overseas if you wish to use those approved by natural/organic certification bodies. Many suppliers ship internationally.

17) Will this course teach me how to start my own skincare brand or formulate products from scratch?

No. The Certificate course will teach you how to make products by learning the principles behind each product type and following our recipes (adapting them if you wish). If you want to learn to formulate skincare products from scratch then our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation would be a good choice for you.

The Certificate course is not designed to help you create your own skincare brand. That’s what we cover step-by-step in our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation.

The Certificate course can certainly be the first step you take towards starting your own brand or formulating your own products but you will need to complete our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation afterwards.

You will gain a good foundational knowledge of different types of products, when and why to use preservatives, emulsifiers and antioxidants and you’ll get lots of recipes to try out. By the end you’ll confidently be creating a range of natural or organic skincare products for face and body including creams and lotions, cleansers, toners, serums, body butters, lotion bars and scrubs.

Our Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation takes your skills to a the next level. This more advanced course will teach you how to formulate your own products from scratch, rather than following our recipes. This means you’ll design a unique product by identifying who the product is for and the benefits you want it to offer. You’ll then use our guides and templates to help you choose your ingredients and create a unique recipe/formula. We cover a wider range of ingredients and also help with business essentials such as creating a brand and selling your products legally. If you want to start a brand or sell your products then the Diploma in Natural Skincare Formulation is designed to help you do that.

Many students only take the Certificate course as that helps them achieve their goal of making products for themselves and their friends and family. Many also start with the Certificate course and then move onto the Diploma course to help develop their skills further.
